The agency’s book of business dates back as far as 1967. The first policy was written by Ernest Deterding, an agent who was a farmer that worked in collaboration with a local insurance mutual. After showing much enthusiasm and interest in the insurance industry, the book of business was then passed down to Ernest’s son, Walter Deterding, who then founded your now known Deterding Insurance Agency. Starting in 1977, the agency wrote policies for Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company and Horse Prairie Mutual Insurance Company to mainly service farmers. Since the agency was founded it has grown and writes directly for 6 different insurance companies and through 2 brokerages providing farmers, businesses, drivers, and residences the proper coverage at a low rate for over 50 years.
